Story

Billie Jean è un singolo del 1983 dall’album Thriller di Michael Jackson. È spesso vista come la canzone che l’ha portato al successo planetario. Fu numero uno nella classifica R&B degli Stati Uniti per nove settimane e numero uno nel Billboard Hot 100. Ricevette due Grammy Awards del 1984 per queste categorie: migliore performance maschile nel R&B e migliore nuova canzone Rhythm & Blues.

Michael Jackson intraprese la composizione di “Billie Jean” ispirato da alcune vicende di natura personale. Nel 1981, durante un tour con i Jackson Five, una donna accusò l’artista di non riconoscere la paternità di un suo figlio. Questa donna fu mandata molto presto in un ospedale psichiatrico, avendo addirittura affermato di essere sposata con Jackson. Più tardi, in un’intervista del 1996, l’artista spiegò che episodi simili si erano verificati anche con gli altri membri dei Jackson Five. “Ogni ragazza diceva che il proprio figlio era legato ad uno dei miei fratelli” disse Jackson .

Michael Jackson cominciò a scrivere la prima demo della canzone nell’autunno del 1981. Quando presentò la canzone al suo co-produttore Quincy Jones, questi ebbe dei problemi con il titolo. I due pensarono che il nome della famosa tennista Billie Jean King suonava bene. Jackson registrò la canzone alla prima performance in multitracce. Le voci di sottofondo furono aggiunte successivamente alla versione definitiva dallo stesso artista. Ma fu il suo arrangiamento che rese unico il singolo. Riuscì giusto in tempo ad ultimare la produzione: solamente poche settimane prima del rilascio dell’album Thriller il 1 dicembre 1982. “Billie Jean” divenne il secondo singolo del disco (il più venduto nella storia, 109 milioni di copie) da rilasciare nel gennaio 1983.  Billie Jean ha venduto 6 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo.

MoonWalk

Il 25 marzo 1983, “Billie Jean” e Michael Jackson raggiunsero un grande livello di audience durante lo spettacolo Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever in occasione dei 25 anni della Motown, la casa discografica che lanciò tra gli altri anche i Jackson 5.

Jackson cantò con il suo vecchio gruppo. Poi ad un certo punto, si presentò vestito con una giacca nera scintillante, un cappello scuro ed un guanto bianco alla mano. Fu la volta di Billie Jean. Quell’abbigliamento diventò celebre. Jackson ha sempre indossato quegli abiti nei successivi concerti per cantare questa hit.

Fu durante quella performance caratterizzata da movimenti molto bizzarri, che il cantante eseguì il celebre “moonwalk” per la prima volta, che infatti non compare nel video. Questa mossa era chiamata “The Back Slide”, ma non era molto conosciuta nella cultura popolare. Ormai quei passi all’indietro sono diventati sinonimo della canzone.

Dopo questa trasmissione, l’album Thriller incrementò le vendite in maniera esponenziale e stabilì un record nelle vendite mai raggiunto prima di allora, e mai più superato.
